Event: Math Club Time: November 10, 2017 (1:00 - 2:00 pm) Location: 201 Goodwyn Hall Speaker: Dr. Tianran Chen Title: Deep learning and deep linear network --- A mathematical overview Abstract: Deep learning (a.k.a. deep structured learning) is a fairly new trend in machine learning and the broader field of artificial intelligence. A particularly powerful deep learning architecture known as deep neural networks has seen very active development in the recent years. In applications to fields including computer vision, speech recognition, audio recognition, automatic translation, and bioinformatics, they have already produced AI comparable or even superior to human experts. Despite its great successes, currently there is almost no theoretical understanding of this method. In this short talk, we briefly review a mathematical framework for studying deep neural networks. Also, there is a social gathering at 12:30 with Math Club, Engineering Club, and Computer Science Club.
